CHIESA di SANTA MARIA LA NOVA:

Posta nell’omonima cava, la chiesa di Santa Maria La Nova è una delle più grandi della città. L’imponente facciata è di stile neoclassico nonostante la chiesa risalga al XV secolo. L’interno riccamente fastoso è decorato da stucchi e dorature. Il tempio custodisce dei veri e propri capolavori d’arte: una Cassa in argento contenente reliquie, una statua dell’Immacolata rivestita di lamine d’argento dagli argentieri sciclitani Catera, la statua lignea del Cristo Risorto realizzata nel 1796 dallo scultore catanese Francesco Pastore e il gruppo statuario dell’Addolorata eseguito sicuramente dal Monachello di Noto. La chiesa di Santa Maria La Nova, architettonicamente, segna il passaggio dallo stile tardo-barocco, allo stile neoclassico.

CHURCH OF SANTA MARIA LA NOVA: Located in the homonymous quarry, the church of Santa Maria la Nova is one of the city’s largest. The magnificent façade reflects the neo-classic style architecture, though it was built during the 15^th century. The interior is richly decorated with stuccos and gildings. The temple is home to some really fine art masterpieces: a silver case containing relics, a statue of the Immaculate Conception coated with silver leafs executed by silver-craftsmen from Scicli by the name of Catera, a wooden statue of Christ’s resurrection carved in 1796 by Francesco Pastore a sculptor from Catania, a compound statue of Our Lady of Sorrows more than likely executed by Monachello di Noto. The church of Santa Maria la Nova, from an architectural point of view, stands as the passage point between late baroque and neo classic styles.
